Description
This Campo del Cielo 2808 gram World Class Iron, with an unbelievable LARGE NATURAL BURN HOLE was purchased for a personal collection in 2006 from a notable Tucson Meteorite Hunter. Although the large ablation is the focus of this piece, the beautiful regmaglypts and thumb printing are also notable. The fall to earth dates 4,000 - 5,000 years ago with the first of the Campo strewn field finds reported in 1576.This Meteorite measures approximately 5 x 4 x 3.5"and converts to 6.19 lbs. The hole opening on this Campo is 4 cm wide and displays very well in four or five orientations.
I have collected many holed specimens in my time, and never seen such a perfect Campo specimen with such a big natural ablation. You will not find a more gorgeous holed specimen like this at such a great value.
Definitions and information about this holed meteorite and its origination:
Ablations:
Meteor ablation
occurs when a
meteor
travels through the Earth's atmosphere and the aerodynamic pressure of the surrounding atmosphere surpasses the material strength of the object. This generates heat from atmospheric entry and breaks up the object, causing it to lose mass.
Campo del Cielo
refers to a group of
iron meteorites
and to the area in Argentina where they were found. The site straddles the
provinces
of
Chaco
and
Santiago del Estero
, 1,000 kilometers (620 mi)
north-northwest
of
Buenos Aires
,
Argentina
. It is half that distance, north-east, to Paraguay's capital,
Asunción
. The crater field covers 3 by 18.5 kilometres (1.9 by 11.5 mi) and contains at least 26 craters, the largest being 115 by 91 meters (377 by 299 ft).
The craters' age is estimated as four to five thousand years. Containing iron masses, they were reported in 1576, but were already well known to local aboriginal inhabitants. The craters and their surrounds contain many fragments of an iron meteorite. The total weight of the pieces recovered is about 100 tonnes, making the meteorite possibly the greatest recovery.
The average composition of the Campo del Cielo meteorite is 6.67% Ni, 0.43% Co, 0.25% P, 87 ppm Ga, 407 ppm Ge, and 3.6 ppm Ir, with the remaining 92.6% being iron. Campo's structural classification are Octahedrite, group IAB
