1965 Better Homes & Gardens MORTON SALT ad
-- page 121 of the April 1965 issue of Better Homes & Gardens. On the other side are instructions on how to boil and broil lobster tails, plus a Tabasco ad. 9 ¼” x 12 ½”.There is a crease across the page and some wrinkles, but that’s to be expected from a page that’s 43 years of age.
Charles Chaplin/Lillian Gish magazine page
-- This rare find is an actual page out of a magazine published BEFORE Charlie Chaplin’s famous Gold Rush movie was finished. Caption reads “Charles Chaplin journeyed to far-away Alaska to make special scenes for his new picture, which is
tentatively titled Chilkoot Pass.
The setting above is a deserted miner’s cabin in which Chaplin, in the role of an innocent prospector, has found temporary shelter.” Note that THE CAPTION REFERRED TO A TENTATIVE TITLE, Chilkoot Pass … the movie was later titled The Gold Rush as we all know. This dates the magazine prior to 1925. Chaplin said that it was the movie he most wanted to be remembered for, and it was his own personal favorite film. website.) In 1925 Chaplin became the first actor to appear on the cover of Time magazine, thanks to this movie.
Additionally, the back of this page contains page 1 of an article about Lillian and Dorothy Gish who “left the United States for Italy in October 1923 to make a picturization of “Ramola” in Florence.” That movie was released in 1924. The article contains her signature as the author, to boot.
So actually this auction item is a valuable collector’s item for either Chaplin fans or Lillian Gish fans!
Charles Chaplin is on page 23 (by the way he’s only 35 years old here) and Lillian Gish is on page 24 (by the way she’s only 31 years old here). There is no indication of which magazine the page comes from, however the scan may give you an idea due to the unique way the page numbers appear.
Magazine page measures 8” x 11 ½” and does have a few tears and slight wrinkles (hey, if you’re 83 years old you’ve got a few wrinkles and tears too!), but overall I would rate it 3 out of 5 stars. You’ll agree it’s in great shape for its age. Add this RARE piece of history to your collection today … once it’s gone, it’s gone!!

It has a faded rubber stamp bearing the name of a colonial village along with an old telephone number (Juniper exchange name). Measures 4” x 6¼”. Overall condition: 7 out of 10 stars (front cover torn 1” on top and bottom spine, some browning, but no writing anywhere).
Secrets of Successful Fishing
-- 34 pages. Judging from the ad on the back cover for the Model TR-VII transistorized fish call, this booklet was likely published in the 1960’s. It originally came with the Sears Ted Williams brand TR-VII transistorized fish call gadget. Booklet measures 4 ¾” x 6 ½”. Overall condition: 9 out of 10 stars.

-- 24 pages, published in 1970 by Reader’s Digest. Contains articles condensed from a variety of books and public addresses in the 1960’s. Measures 5” x 7”. Overall condition: 7 out of 10 stars (pages are browned, but no writing anywhere).

1909 magazine, The Independent
-- ultra-RARE July 1, 1909 issue of The Independent magazine featuring a photo of the University of Wisconsin on the front cover and article coverage. Volume LXVII (67), No. 3161. Magazine contains 22 pages plus a total of 42 pages of ads in the front and back. The advertisements are so nostalgic! Coca Cola, girls school, property for sale, chocolates, Lord & Taylor hosiery, typewriters, underwear, banks, hotels, and all kinds of products from yesteryear. It’s in remarkably good condition for its age of 99 years old … just slight cover wear such as a few creases on the back cover and some browning of pages, but no writing anywhere, no tears or rips. A phenomenal find! The Independent was a weekly magazine founded in 1848.

-- Operating Guide for the Hitachi Portable Radio with Cassette Tape Recorder model KCT-125OH. It’s not in great cosmetic shape (brown spots, a rip on the front, etc.) but it will make a nice addition to your collection. Four-page fold-out, front and back. There is no year printed on it but it’s old!

Rare drawing/print of TED WILLIAMS (Boston Red Sox)
-- 6” x 9” print of Ted Williams in action. It appears to be a drawing printed on woven paper, almost as thick as cardstock. It’s in fantastic condition. (Of course your print won’t have the word “Sample” across it.)

Theodore Samuel Williams was born in August 30, 1918 in San Diego, California and was nicknamed The Splendid Splinter, Teddy Ballgame or simply The Kid. He played in 18 all star games with the Boston Red Sox, batting left-handed but throwing right-handed. On January 20, 1966, Ted was voted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame with a 93% approval. He is the last Major Leaguer to hit 400. His 521 home runs place him 4th on the all time list. Many insist that Ted Williams ranks with Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb as the greatest hitters who ever lived. Williams was a two-time Most Valuable Player winner who also won the Triple Crown twice (only one other player has ever won the Triple Crown twice). He was an obsessive student of batting, hit for both power and average. In 1970 he wrote a book on the subject, The Science of Hitting; Revised (1986), which is read by virtually every baseball player. He was also an avid fisherman who maintained, for some period, a television show about fishing and was also inducted into the Fishing Hall of Fame. Ted Williams passed away on July 5, 2002 in Inverness, Florida. The Ted Williams Tunnel in Boston, Massachusetts was named in his honor while he was still alive.

-- 1982 tin entitled "A Kiss for You." Part of the limited Hershey's Hometown Series. Vintage artwork of a little girl giving a little boy a 'kiss', with Hershey Kisses encircling the lower part of the tin. 5” in diameter, 2“ tall. Near mint condition. Bottom says “copyright 1982 Hershey Foods Corp. Made in England.”

– 16 vintage paper coasters from The Fairmont, Montego Beach, Jamaica. They measure 3 1/4" in diameter.
2 RARE Cypress Gardens slides
-- from a 1998 Cypress Gardens media kit. One slide captures a couple in the ice skating show and the other slide is of a beautiful bridge. Cypress Gardens, Florida's original theme park, was founded by Dick Pope Sr., the "Father of Florida Tourism.” On January 2, 1936, Cypress Gardens opened what would eventually become a showplace for 8,000 varieties of flowers from over 90 different countries. However, the park closed on April 13, 2003. The state Department of Environmental Protection agreed to spend million as part of a deal to save Cypress Gardens. It has now been purchased and reopened, complete with rollercoasters and a water park.

-- the pad contains 76 schedules, copyright 1963. Cover has slight fading along edges but the sheets inside are perfect. Inside front cover says: “REMEMBER THIS … IF YOU WORK FOR A MAN, in Heaven’s name, WORK for him. ~ If he pays you wages which supply you bread and butter, work for him; speak well of him; stand by him and stand by the institution he represents.~ If put to a pinch, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness.~ If you must vilify, con­demn and eternally disparage -- resign your position, and when you are outside, damn to your heart’s content, but as long as you are part of the institution do not condemn it. ~ If you do that, you are loosening the tendrils that are holding you to the institution, and at the first high wind that comes along, you will be uprooted and blown away, and probably will never know the reason why. —- ELBERT HUBBARD”

Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois was formed on February 23, 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. Its principal motto is: Service Above Self. Rotary also later embraced a code of ethics, called The 4-Way Test, that has been translated into hundreds of languages.

– recorded on a ¼” x 600 feet plastic base reel to reel tape, Crescent Magnetic Sound Recording Tape No. 85. Back of box says Frank Carter / Blooper records. Approximately 30 minutes per side. Side 1 contains:

Judging from the background audience, it sounds like a live performance in a saloon or something! He makes quite a few dedications to Dicky “Doc” Johnson. Here is a sampling of the songs:

Volume 6 Pardon my Blooper -- An album of Radio and TV’s Most Hilarious Boners (Kermit Schaefer).
There are some REALLY FUNNY ones on here! The vintage radio announcing style is so retro. Kermit Schaefer was a successful radio and television writer/producer from the 1950's and 1960's, who will forever be known for his collection of “bloopers” - radio and television mistakes, gaffes, malaprops, spoonerisms, and tied-up tongues … or as he called it, “a collection of unintended indiscretions before microphone and camera.” He is the person who coined the word “bloopers”, for mistakes and gaffes of radio and TV announcers and personalities. Bloopers came into prominence in 1931, when radio announcer Harry Von Zell mispronounced the name of then-President of the United States Herbert Hoover as "Hoobert Heever" on the air, but Schaefer's is believed to be the first attempt at collecting and presenting them. Side 2 of the reel to reel tape was recorded very low, so I didn’t get to listen to it.
