    ~ Original Four (4) Natural Holes ~ Face Mask Appearance
    This tear-drop round example, found in Thailand (Chaiyaphum), is a special piece being very unusual with four natural holes (24mm x 18mm x 13 mm). Three of the holes are naturally arranged giving a human face-mask appearance. This is an extremely rare shape, and I would say that we will never see another natural piece like this again, ever!
    In this instance, it appears that a trapped pocket of air protected the center of this natural black piece as it re-entered the atmosphere. Over much time, the overall exterior surface was pitted, the result primarily of terrestrial etching by soil and water acids. In contrast, the interior surface is relatively smooth. At some point, the thin surface skin was worn away creating a hole exposing the interior that was previously protected by an air bubble.
    Over the ages, the acidic soil and running water etched away more surface texture creating three additional holes that interestingly enough formed what looks like a human face-mask.
    This tektite, known as an Indochinite, formed from vaporized terrestrial rock following a massive meteorite impact in southeastern Asia some 700,000 years ago. Indochinites are a black-colored, shiny and well-formed natural glass that are typically subspherical to teardrop shaped.
    These tektites formed when molten (or semi-molten) material, created by the meteorite’s hypervelocity impact, flew through the air eventually hardening into natural glass with aerodynamic forms and surface features.
