Antique Palissy Majolica Mafra Caldas Portugal Pitcher Underplate Lizards Insect

Description

This is a great piece of antique palissy majolica from Portugal's M. Mafra. I've seen similar pieces dated to around 1890. This pitcher features lizards and large beetles and has a matching underplate.
This pitcher is
glossy and colorful and displays well, but does have some flaws, the biggest of which is a chip on the lizard-handle's nose. Because of the shape and coloring of this chip, it almost looks like it is part of the design of the lizard himself and doesn't detract much from the display of this wonderful piece. You'll also see some little chipping in the green grass-like finish - mostly on the underplate. There is a footing chip on the plate and some glaze flakes to the base of the pitcher as well. We've taken sample photos of some of these flaws.
This lovely pitcher measures about 6 1/2 inches from the tip of its spout to the edge of its handle. The jug stands 9 inches tall from its base to the top of the lizard's nose. The underplate is 8 1/4 inches in diameter.
